From Vikings to Versailles
Château de l'Isle-Marie stands on the
elevated site of a Viking fortress. In winter it is truly
an island; the fields surrounding the gardens are flooded
and the castle, wreathed in a magical mist, seems to float
on a shimmering sea that mirrors a silver sky.
In spring and summer the lush meadows and woodlands
of
the estate burst into blossom and in autumn the countryside
is ablaze with colour.
The main residence on l'Isle-Marie is built
in a delightful, neo-renaissance style.
On the estate are two other fine houses. In
the seventeenth century Field Marshall de Bellefonds - a companion
of king Louis XIV - added a manor house with an adjacent chapel
designed by Mansart, the architect of Versailles.
And last but not least, there is the beautiful
late sixteenth century Château aux Espaules.
